The gradient of this 2nd-category pass is steep and consistent. It is a demanding climb, partly through woodland with numerous hairpin bends. This side of the pass is the most arduous.
Right from the start, as you leave Saint-Béat-Lez, the gradient offers very little respite, fluctuating steadily between 8 per cent and 11 per cent for most of the route. After Boutx, a series of superb hairpin bends follow one after the other, and the gradient steepens further over the final five hundred metres.
1 - As soon as you leave Saint-Béat-Lez, after crossing the Garonne, the road climbs immediately through woodland. Up to Boutx, the gradient varies between 8 per cent and 9 per cent. 2 - After passing through the village of Boutx, the gradient becomes significantly steeper for 3 km. 3 - The road then continues with a series of lovely, smooth hairpin bends.
It is in this area that you’ll find the memorial to Luis Ocaña, the great Spanish cyclist of the 1970s. 4 - The final kilometre has the steepest gradient, with no respite right up to the summit.
