CYCL - MONTÉE DU COL DES ARES DEPUIS FRONSAC
Description
Average gradient: 3.9% – Maximum gradient: 11% – Summit altitude: 797m.
With a steady gradient that reaches a challenging percentage in places, the climb up this small pass is ideal for preparing to tackle the other passes in the Central Pyrenees or for early-season training.
Set in wooded surroundings throughout the route, it is very pleasant during hot weather.
The route starts from the village of Fronsac (D618). The first few kilometres are gentle, with the occasional slight ‘up-and-down’ section, allowing you to find your rhythm without overexerting yourself.

Detailed stages
1 - Set off from Fronsac, heading towards Antichan de Frontignes via the D618; the gradient is very gentle for 1 km.
2 - The gradient then steepens slightly, levelling off at around 4 per cent to 5 per cent as the road winds through a deciduous forest. The road surface is generally in good condition and the bends are wide, making for a very smooth ride.
3 - Near the village of Antichan de Frontignes, a wide, scenic bend offers a lovely view of the valley.
4 - The road continues through the forest once more, and this is where the most challenging part of the climb begins.
After a final series of hairpin bends, the gradient eases off over the last 500 metres.
