Golf Circuit

This fountain and washhouse is part of the chateau de Kerrousseau, and was built in the 19th century. The spring feeds a fountain that overflows into a stone channel in the washhouse. The two solid-bottomed basins lined with cut stones were used in ancient times to wash laundry. 

Hydraulic power, the only reliable source of energy, intensified in the 19th century. Here you will come across the Kerrousseau mill, already in use in 1671 and built on the stream of the same name, then Frémeur mill, on the Pont-Scorff side on the Scave river. Only ruins remain, but a flour mill known as Kerruisseau exists further downstream on the departmental road.

Belonging to the department, the Bois de Kerrousseau is managed by the French National Forestry Office. It includes natural woodland and patches that were replanted following the 1987 hurricane. This section was planted with larch, conifers from the Alps which lose their needles in the autumn, turning from tender green in the summer to yellow in the autumn. They are appreciated for their imperishable wood.

Located at the bottom of a valley along a stream, this wet area is characterised by its waterlogged land and typical vegetation, in particular large tufts of grass known as carex. The area has been planted with poplars which also like to have their feet in the water! Poplar planting developed in France during the 20th century.

Opened in 1990, Val Quéven Golf Course is located in the former grounds of Kerrousseau. You will discover it all along this circuit. For your safety, the golf course is only open to players.

Dating from the 4th millennium B.C., the Neolithic tomb of Kerroc’h is comprised of two chambers and a corridor, previously enclosed by a mound. These dolmens were probably covered with a stone corbel arch, similar to those used in ancient ovens. Excavations in 1904 revealed human bones, alongside daggers and flint knives, axes and pottery.

The woodland in this area is planted with birch. Growing on poor, bare land, birch can easily be recognised from its white bark striped with grey, its spade-shaped leaves and its fruit, called catkins.

This part of the Kerrousseau departmental wood contains typical Breton forest trees, such as beech, oak and chestnut. The latter are said to have been introduced by the Romans. They played an important role in the daily life of the peasants who used it as food and for carpentry and heating fuel.

This imposing circular well, along with the ruins of the castle’s cellars, enclosure wall and gates, is one of the last remains of this domain. Already a noble place in 1464, it includes a manor, chapel and dovecote. At the end of the 18th century, it was replaced by a recreational chateau requisitioned by the Germans during the Second World War as a holiday destination. They set light to it before they fled in August 1944.
