Le pont Saint-Etienne est emprunté par les pélerins de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle depuis des siècles (via Lemovicensis ou voie de Vezelay). Aux abords de ces 2 ponts, le quartier des Ponticauds abrite encore quelques maisons du XVIIIème siècle.

La cathédrale Saint Etienne, édifiée du XIIIème au XIXème siècles, domine le quartier médiéval de la Cité.

Les ponts Saint-Martial et Saint-Etienne sont des ponts à becs datant tout deux du XIIIème siècle. Ces 2 ponts de pierre ont longtemps été les seuls traits d'union entre les rives droite et gauche de la Vienne. Le pont Saint-Martial a été bâti sur les fondations d'un ancien pont gallo-romain.

The cobbled, humpbacked Saint-Martial bridge resembles the Saint-Etienne bridge. However, its origins go back much further: its piers rest on Roman granite bases. It replaced a ford further downstream (la Rôche-au-Gô), and extended the city's decumanus maximus. Today, it leads to an ancient island on the right bank, the Sainte-Félicité district.

Begun in 1273, this Gothic edifice was completed at the end of the 19th century, representing six centuries of construction. The flamboyant Gothic Saint-Jean portal is particularly impressive when lit at night. The interior features a richly ornate rood screen in Renaissance style. The building remains one of the few major Gothic monuments south of the Loire. Following an excavation campaign in the summer of 2005, an exceptional baptistery - one of the largest in France - was discovered at the foot of the cathedral. Historic monument.
