Description

From the Middle Ages to the Iron Age, a descent in time and an ascent on the causse. From the Templar and Hospitaller jewel of Ste-Eulalie de Cernon, get to the Oppidum of Puech du Mus.

From the north of the car park, take left a gravelled path that climbs slightly. Pass in front of a reservoir and continue climbing. Following the yellow marks, when you arrive at a forked tree, turn right and go through the oaks and boxwoods on a steep path to reach the base of the cliffs. Cross a small barrier and continue climbing.
During the ascent, let on the right the path going to “L’Assetadou” and continue straight. You arrive in a pasture, pass below a barn, walk around it to reach the television relay and the archaeological site of the Celtic Oppidum of Puech du Mus (magnificent view of the Cernon valley).
Return to the barn and go east on a wide dirt road that passes near a second reservoir. Oblique left (north) to arrive in a wide track.
Follow it to the left. It’s lined by forage crops and cereals and it arrives to a crossroad (GR71C), at the edge of the plateau.
Turn left on the stony path that goes down to the Frayssinet farm and continue on the small road on 200 m. Following the signs, take the first dirt path on your left that goes to a small pass, then go down on a farm road to Mas de Roques. Follow on the small road that join the D77 road at the fountain of Mas de Roques.
Take left the D77 to return to Sainte-Eulalie.

Advice

You cross sometimes classified areas, presenting protected species. Close the gate in the grazing area, don’t near the sheep, keep the animals on a leash. Stay on marked trails, respect private property and nature. Don’t pick flowers. Bring back your waste, take care of the risk of fires. Put on good shoes and take enough water. Ambiance

An archeological site discovered on the western edge of the Larzac Causse, the Puech du Mus refers to a Celtic oppidum of the 5th century BC. Overhanging the high Cernon valley, it offers a 360-degree panorama on Ste-Eulalie, the Larzac causse and, on the horizon the Cevenol peaks. If the path is steep at the start, the oppidum and the landscape are well worth it.
