Constituted by the fusion of several islands, according to its etymology, it is on this island where we fought in duel. In the XIIIth century, the farmers of Chaillot have the right to make graze their cows in exchange for a fee in cash and in kind paid to the abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. In 1789, the brother Jacques and Augustin Périer are in charge by the city of Paris to install steam mills there to answer the wintry shortage of flour, when waters of the Seine are too low to feed water mills. Renamed then île aux Cygnes, not to confuse with the current île aux Cygnes, more recent artificial construction and more downstream on the Seine.
L'île aux Juifs belonged to the abbey Saint-Germain-des-Prés and was, in 1313, the theater of the torture of Jacques de Molay, great master of the order of the Knight Templars who was burnt alive and who protested of his innocence on the stake. Near her was the île à la Gourdaine, on which was a mill. These two islands were granted by Henri IV to Achille de Harlay, who gathers them in the Cité.
Its name comes because it was only a field of pasture, it was an uninhabited island essentially covered with meadows. It was gathered in l'île Notre-Dame at the end of the XVIIth century, during the urban operation which contributed to train the current island Saint-Louis.
Also called île aux Javiaux, it belonged in 1408 to Nicolas de Louviers, provost of the traders. Originally covered with pastures, it was acquired by the city in 1700 and leased to wood merchants. In 1816, the island was still uninhabited and served as immense construction site(work) of firewood for the Parisians. During the days of June, 1848, temporary camps were established there to welcome a part of the army of Paris.
