Mauléon had an important part to play in the Vendéen Wars. For a long time there was a dispute between the Whites and the Blues. The town is today dominated by a monument commemorating this dramatic period.
Two great battles on several days in 1793, marked the fate of Châtillon-sur-Sèvre (previous name of Mauléon), the first at the beginning of July, the second in October. A large stone cross stands in the place, as well as a Vendéen statue turned towards the town.
