Located on the edge of a coastal river, Niort sees its port, as it evolves, change place over the centuries.
First, the medieval haven, located under the current Brisson street, allows the transport and export of foodstuffs (salt of Aunis in the hinterland, wheat in Spain, wine and fabrics in England and Flanders, etc.).
Then, in the 14th century, a port, more important, is installed place du Port. From the sixteenth century, from New France is thus BOOK THE MATERIAL (raw skins and fish oils) to the Niortaise chamoiseries.
Finally, at the end of the 19th century, Port Boinot became the link between Niort and the Atlantic. Then the boating industry gradually began to decline with the arrival of railways and road transport. Boinot will find again in 2020-21 a new river traffic, tourist this time!
