Its name derives from the Gallic bank designating the edge of a road or from the German berg meaning height and Groie which is a brown limestone land. The seigneury was first mentioned in 1244 and was attached to that of Prahecq, then to the Marquisat de Fors until 1611. In 1791, the parish belonged to the canton of Prahecq. One of his first lords was Aubert de Poilevoisin, who was supported by Hugues de Lusignan during the conflict between him and St Louis in 1242, which led to the temporary confiscation of his lands. In 1775, there were about twenty estates, a windmill and a stud. The old building, composed mainly of farms, today testifies to the agricultural past of the municipality.
