A Gothic masterpiece built of black lava stone, the Cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption dominates Clermont-Ferrand and offers an exceptional insight into medieval religious art.
Begun in 1248 at the instigation of Bishop Hugues de La Tour, the Cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption marks a major turning point in regional religious architecture. Its master builder, Jean Deschamps, chose to abandon traditional arkose stone for black lava stone from the puy de la Nugère in Volvic. This choice gave the building its unique identity, and had a lasting impact on the image of Clermont-Ferrand and the surrounding villages.
Unfinished for over five centuries, the cathedral finally adopted its emblematic silhouette in the XIXᵉ century, thanks to the work of Viollet-le-Duc (1814-1879). The architect then designed the harmonious façade and the two slender spires, built between 1862 and 1901, which rise above the city today.
The building offers a remarkable blend of Gothic and Neo-Gothic architecture, both in its elevation and lines, and in the richness of its interior decor and liturgical furnishings, making the cathedral a major monument of Auvergne's religious heritage.
