In the Basque Country, 55 km southwest of Biarritz, Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port owes its name to its location at the foot of the Cize passes, including the famous Col de Roncesvalles, port meaning pass.
Listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998, the Porte Saint-Jacques is the historic entrance for pilgrims on their way to Compostela, who pass through Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port on their way to Roncesvalles from the Madeleine district of Saint-Jean-le-Vieux. It offers a fine view of the Arradoy hill, once a stone quarry and now planted with vines under the Irouléguy appellation.
A quick glimpse of a first-rate sports complex then past the Jai Alai, a large building below where Cesta Punta (Basque Pelota) is played, stands the bas-relief of Juan de Huarte, physician-philosopher and precursor of career guidance.
