In the center of the village of Ainhoa classified Most Beautiful Village of France, in the borough and the street bastide, is the church our Lady of the Assumption.
This church-castle is of Romanesque period and is registered since 1996 on the list of the Historic buildings
The building, which became a church in the 13th century, was built on top of a fortified house dating from the 12th century. The church was probably dedicated to the Virgin Mary by Juan Perez de Baztan, lord of the castle of Jaureguizar and Ainhoa. Inside, the church of Our Lady of the Assumption presents the characteristics of the Labourdine religious architecture: a single nave, without pillars, covered with a frame, as well as floors of tribunes, called galleries.
