The first wooden bathhouses were built around 1845, and in 1858 a second one was built because it was washed away by the waves, but was destroyed by a tidal wave in 1924.
This neo-regional style building was inaugurated in 1925 and destroyed by fire in 1928.
A complex was inaugurated in 1930. It was bought by the city in 1939. A collapse of the cliff in 1971 closed the building to the public.
It was rebuilt identically and inaugurated in 2009 after being closed for more than 30 years
Designed by the architect José Moraiz, the building has been restored to its original function as a sea bathing facility, with rooms for lifeguards, surfing clubs and schools, and showers
A sculpture by Joël Roux has been erected on the esplanade, in homage to the surfing tontons who in 1957 launched surfing in Europe.
