A key site in French history, Saint-Sardos will astonish you with its legendary past: it was the destruction of the bastide by the English in the 14th century that sparked off the Hundred Years' War! For lovers of old stones, let yourself be carried away to the village: the church, partly ruined, still has its magnificent 12th-century Romanesque portal, listed as a Monument Historique. It was restored in the 20th century and features two columns sculpted with fabulous animals and fantastic characters.
