The fortified town of Damazan was originally built on the plain of the Garonne River by Alphonse de Poitiers in 1259, but now sits on the edge of the Canal du Garonne. The bastide is a perfect square shape, due to the lack of geographical constraints in its immediate surroundings. The façades of the main square and its woodwork have been painted in traditional colours (blue, yellow, ochre, etc) to enhance the stonework of the half-timbered and corbelled houses. A covered market, rebuilt in the 19th century, occupies the centre of the square.
