This monument seems to have been influenced by that of Saint-Yzans de Médoc, which erected a "column to the Virgin" in 1856-1858 after having been delivered from typhoid fever. Was Saint-Germain d'Esteuil in turn affected by an epidemic or did the parish simply want to have "its" column too? It stands on a massive quadrangular base bearing four short Latin inscriptions and a date. The attic base is punctuated with claws and the smooth shaft is encircled at mid-height by a thick ring decorated with letters among foliage. Above a heavy capital stands a statue of the Virgin and Child.
