The Ursulines opened an establishment for the instruction of young girls in 1626 at Saint-Macaire, on the initiative of the jurats who wanted to find a counterpart to the Jesuit college for boys and under the protection of Cardinal François de Sourdis. The convent closed its doors in 1792 to become a communal hospital, then a retirement home in the middle of the 19th century. Particularly noteworthy is the superimposed gallery, marked by basket-handle arches, which served the classrooms on the ground floor and the dormitories on the first floor.
