The main gateway to the old town takes its name from the Entre-deux-Mers region facing it: the Count of Benauge was suzerain before the town benefited from communal franchises. The possibility of building fortifications, a freedom reserved for the nobility and the clergy, was a demonstration of emancipation. Thus, the first communal house was located against the Benauge gate in the 16th century and the municipality never conceived the project of demolishing such a symbol, although the base of the tower was somewhat trimmed to make it easier for vehicles to pass through.
