At the level of the church and the Priory of Saint-Sauveur, the line of the ramparts forms a foundation consisting of an artificial terrace and old cellars. Their foundation was bathed by the Garonne until the middle of the 17th century. During floods, the river regularly comes to greet them. Its doubling under the monastery explains the reinforcement by solid buttresses very close together which supported a wooden hourd forming the parapet walk. The prosperity of the merchants is at the origin of the construction of the first fortified enclosure of Saint-Macaire.
