The Cartelègue word comes from quartaleuca-meaning "the fourth-place"because the village was placed on the Roman road from Saintes to Bordeaux and the 9 km separating Blaye from Cartelègue corresponded to four Gallic leagues. The church of St-Romain depended primarily on Cluny and St-Sauveur de Blaye. This Romanesque church dates from the 12th and 13th century. During work in the cemetery, workers found the body of a man wearing many shells St Jacques. This mysterious character seemed to be a pilgrim on his route for pilgrimage. The altarpiece is made of painted wood and the apse is registered as a national heritage site.
