Labescau may come from Gascony the abacus, "the bishop", to designate a property of the bishop.
Labescau, a village in the Landes de Gascogne, is the only commune in Gironde without a church
The oldest known mention of Labescau dates from 1283, when the bishop of Bazas had to share justice with the royal authority. This supports the hypothesis that Labescau is a wooded reserve dependent on the bishop's property. The bishop sold his estate to the Loupiac family, who owned it from 1488 to 1600. The local castle dates from this period.
