In 1925, when the site was occupied by a dozen fishermen's huts, Jean Parson built a shelter for "cold bath lovers".
Very quickly the establishment, baptized "La Barbotière" was a great success and became a party place with a dance hall and refreshment bar.
In 1934, the "guinguette" closes but the name "Barbotière" remains and still designates this port which was formerly called "Port de Mestras".
Equipped with modern oyster farms, the activity of the port of La Barbotière is very important. The "Lycée de la Mer", built in 1991, trains every year many young people in all the trades of the sea and in particular in shellfish farming.
