The lateral canal to the Garonne was dug during the first half of the 19th century and inaugurated in 1856. Castets-en-Dorthe, located at the meeting point between the canal and the river, has three locks built at that time. Lock 53, known as the Garonne lock, has a special function due to its location at the junction of the river. As a double lock, it can only be operated by an authorised officer, given the particular regime of the river and the 10-metre difference in level with the canal. The lock is always in operation and its functioning can be observed, bearing in mind that the opening regime is linked to the tidal hours.
