Eglise Saint-Sauveur de Saint-Macaire

With a double vocation of priory and parish, the church of Saint-Macaire has a chevet that refers to a centred building plan, whose fourth apse would have been replaced by a single nave. The system of supports in place in the choir suggests that the building must have been vaulted with a row of domes: the dispute with the suzerain abbey Sainte-Croix de Bordeaux delayed the work and led to the adoption of a Gothic style of vaulting. Each of the three apses is treated as a semi-polygon whose edges are internally erased by a set of blind arches justifying crowns of historiated capitals.
