Founded in 1099, the church of Carcans was the seat of a priory until the 13th century. At that time, it was erected as a parish. Carcans was a relay for pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela coming from Saintonge. As a souvenir, the church preserves a magnificent statue of Saint Jacques in pilgrim costume dating from the 17th century and classified as a Historical Monument. The present church was built in 1870 in the neo-gothic style; the altar, from the same period, is made of polychrome marble. The choir organ, made in Germany, was installed in 1971 during the restoration of the church.
