In the founding charter of the bastide, Eleanor of Provence undertakes that the King of England will erect walls to protect the town. Attacked by the Capetians, the inhabitants are in a hurry and build a palisade of wooden logs. Returning under English guardianship, they recall in 1306 the promise made forty years earlier. The king then granted the right to take the stones from his quarries to build the ramparts and gates. The belt stretches for about 1800 metres. Still very visible for three quarters of the way, it disappears to the south-east.
