40km east of Bordeaux, Saint Emilion is an architectural gem set against a backdrop of vineyards, of internationally renowned wines. The town was created around the cave where Saint Emilion, a Breton hermit who withdrew from society in the 8th century, lived, in a cave carved into the limestone cliff.
The city has many listed monuments including the collegiate church, Doyenne cloister, the monolithic church hollow into the rock, Roy Tower. It has steep streets called tertres and escalettes.
Since 1999, the Jurisdiction of Saint Emilion has been listed on the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites as a “cultural landscape”.
