In the heart of the Entre-Deux-Mers vineyard, Sauveterre-de-Guyenne is a bastide founded in 1281 by King Edward I. The town's location at a crossroads of traffic gave it economic and strategic importance from its origins. Today, its main source of wealth revolves around vines and wine
Sauveterre-de-Guyenne has preserved its tumultuous past with its central square with arcades and four surrounding gates: the Porte Saubotte (17 metres high, 2 guard rooms, open to visitors), the Porte de la Font, the Porte Saint-Romain and the Porte Saint-Léger. Also to be seen: a 13th century sundial on the southern buttress of the chevet of the Notre-Dame church, some 16th century half-timbered houses, several churches and a wash-house.
