30 km north of Bordeaux, the Citadelle of Bourg overlooks the Dordogne upstream of the Gironde Estuary, born from the confluence of the river and the Garonne. Of the charterhouse built in the 18th century which dominates the city, only the elegant façade remains today, the residence having been burnt down during the Second World War. Restored since then, the interior is now used as a reception room.
Stroll through the Citadel's park, a French garden. Enjoy the scent of old roses and admire the string-lined walkways lined with carefully pruned shrubs. Enjoy the view from the small port of Bourg to this wide Estuary, then walk down the narrow streets of this peaceful town, looking up at its beautiful residences, including a curious Moorish-influenced house, a style that was very fashionable in the 19th century, to the covered wash-house at the bottom of the town.
