The Château de La Hierce, located almost in the heart of the town of Brantôme, is a pleasure residence built during the 1520–30s under the reign of Francis I. This building is constructed on a limestone cliff pierced with caves that serve as its foundations. It is one of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture in the Périgord. Erected on a site that has been occupied for several thousand years, as evidenced by the troglodytic dwellings adjoining the monument and the prehistoric engravings adorning one of the caves, La Hierce is the only example in the Périgord of a château with an exclusively Renaissance architectural style, free from any medieval or Gothic influence. Entirely listed as a Historical Monument since 1892, it preserves, within the 8 rooms open to the public, one of the finest furniture collections in the Périgord and numerous collections.
