Notre Dame de Bonne Espérance

Azeratchapelle

Description

Notre-Dame-de-Bonne-Espérance, 13th, 15th and 19th century chapel
Pilgrimage founded in the 13th century by the Knight of Souillac, Lord of Azérat and Montmège, who, returning from the Holy Land with the retinue of Philippe Auguste, was caught in a storm. He vowed to the Virgin to build an oratory near his castle, which he did on his return. The old statue of the Virgin was burned during the Revolution. The small chapel is preceded by a covered peristyle, supported by two stone columns at the corners and two wooden pillars. It opens through a 15th century moulded door with a pointed arch. The interior is vaulted over ribbed ribbed arches, supported by carved lamp heads. Contact the Town Hall on 05 53 05 21 26 (Mon, Tue, Fri and Thu from 2pm to 6pm).
