By creating 'The restaurant of the Sirène at Asnieres' Van Gogh was clearly influenced by the impressionist movement, and created his own style. Impressionists like Renoir preferred to show atmospheres and scenes from the inside of restaurants, while Van Gogh often portrays the outside, like this canvas. It uses bright colors, but also the luminosity of white paint to portray a summer day. In the foreground, three men sit at a table,
one wears a blue shirt and a yellow straw hat, which suggests the presence of Paul Signac himself.
