Description

Located on rue de la Gare, the Malterie de Champagne was founded in 1883 by the Bonnette brothers.
Its main activity was to transform barley into malt (the raw material used to make beer and whisky) using a soaking process that allowed artificial germination.
During the Second World War, the Malting plant was very badly damaged. In addition to the fact that barley fell for 4 years under a strict German quota which caused it to lose more than 50% of its activity, it was hit by two aerial bombardments (1st and 30th May 1944). Some of the buildings and machinery, all roofs, doors, windows and partitions had to be repaired. In 1995, the municipality decided to immortalize the Chaplain's memory in the former grain stores of the Maltese Malting Company.

Since 2000, it has housed the "Ancienne Malterie de Champagne" museum, which presents a heritage (postcards, cups, diplomas, models, models, paintings, vehicles) that illustrates the 20th century thanks to donations from Chaplain families, companies and friends of the city. Thus a pre-war housing, an old-fashioned classroom have been restored. You can also discover tools from crafts, industry (especially textiles) and agriculture, a locomotive trader, and a 1935 fire truck, etc. Finally, it should be noted that since January 2003, this museum has housed a superb and very rare electrified model representing the former SNCF "Eiffel" style roundabouts, destroyed in May 1944.
