Description

Built within a fortified enclosure, Château de Villeneuve retains most of its 15th-century structure, despite a number of later alterations. The ensemble displays the characteristics of seigniorial residences built shortly after the Hundred Years' War, combining a defensive system with decorative architecture for the dwelling. There is an entrance châtelet with carriage and pedestrian gates, dating from the 12th century, with particularly fine arches. This gives access to a huge courtyard formed by the former farm buildings, whose blind facades to the outside formed a protective barrier. To the south, the former south-facing dwelling has the typical layout of manor houses from this era, with its sweeping stairway.
The entire property was restored in accordance with the rules of the trade, with the help of skilled architects and craftsmen, over a period of more than 30 years.
Historic gardens have been reconstructed, and visitors can appreciate their originality as they stroll through the grounds, accompanied by an explanatory leaflet. After passing the gatehouse, a landscaped courtyard is surrounded by the old buildings of this fortified farm. To the south, an Italian-inspired garden occupies the terrace of the old dwelling. A geometric bed of boxwood squares features flat areas of coloured plants, vegetables and flowers. This garden is surrounded by pergolas covered with rambling roses and original fountains. Below, a dark bosco stands in exuberant contrast to the bright upper garden.
Around the bend in the terrace wall, discover an inventive orchard, overlooked by a vine on the Layon hillsides.
Outside the walls, the walled garden of Artus, surrounded by a hornbeam, will allow you to discover the charms of the Middle Ages. A yew maze leads to the fountain of youth. The Armide garden evokes the Crusades.
The walk ends with an avenue of yew and boxwood topiaries, where plant warriors battle it out.
An explanatory booklet is provided.
The regional association of parks, gardens and landscapes of the Pays de la Loire (APJPL) has awarded Villeneuve the official "Beau jardin des pays de la Loire" label.
