Built in 1710, partially demolished by order of Louis XIV and restored in 1821, the Pontchâteau Calvary is a remarkable cultural and religious site.
A life-size, three-dimensional Way of the Cross, the Calvary is also set in a vast landscaped park.
The route is lined with sculpted groups representing the various stations of Christ's Passion, and punctuated by a series of extremely fine aediculae in a variety of styles.
Visitors, like pilgrims, finish their journey by climbing Golgotha, an artificial mountain offering an interesting view of the surrounding Brière area.
On the same site, visit the Calvary Museum, which tells the story of the Pontchâteau Calvary and presents the various Christian missions around the world. Exhibitions are held here every year.
The Calvary has managed to preserve and renew its religious vocation, and still welcomes a large number of pilgrims every year.
