The west end of the "Bassin du Commerce" ends with the Volcan, Le Havre's cultural centre designed by Oscar Niemeyer and finished in 1982. Its architectural expression derives from Le Corbusier's doctrines.
It displays a veil of concrete painted in white, with free-flowing curves trying to reach architectural poetry.
The site has undergone improvement and renovation work for several years.
Nowadays, within the Grand Volcan, the Volcan National Theatre continues to produce and present artistic performances in 4,000 m².
The redevelopment of this ensemble has focused on the use of light and the choice of materials. Wood is given pride of place: seats, flooring, entrance hall desks. The hall has been completely transformed: it now enables meetings after the shows or concerts. The small room is used for smaller artistic shows, especially shows for children and conferences.
The Petit Volcan houses a big city library that opened on 3rd November 2015.
This new 5,000 m² library is an emblematic cultural centre of the city: there is a wide range of written, musical, visual, physical and digital resources for all ages as well as new amenities: a cafeteria, rooms to listen to music and watch movies, all set in a well-thought-out and comfortable setting.
