Eglise Saint-Nicolas

Eglise Saint-Nicolas

Description

Replacing a 17th century building (located on the site of today's covered market), the church was built from 1860 onwards and opened for worship in 1864, but was not completed until 1896. It is neo-Gothic in style (13th century). The building has no transept and three naves. Most of the stained glass windows date from the 19th century.

The statuary includes some remarkable old elements:
- Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, a gilded wooden statue of the Virgin Mary (1629), two gilded wooden reliquaries, a deacon and a soldier.
- a deacon and a Roman soldier (18th century)
- Baptismal font: wooden statue of Saint Nicolas (1630), group representing the baptism of Jesus (18th century).
- Two contemporary works are by Batz sur Mer sculptor Jean Fréour. These are Christ in Glory in the choir, and Saint Joseph and Jesus as an adolescent, a carpenter's apprentice.

In 2017, the church welcomed a new organ, designed and built by master organ builder Bertrand Cattiaux and his team. As such, it can be described as a veritable "masterpiece" - a work of art that can be seen and heard...
In terms of design, its resolutely modern architecture is reminiscent of the sails of boats, slightly bulging in the wind, recalling the maritime dimension of Le Pouliguen.
On the musical side, its Franco-Flemish aesthetic makes it a polyphonic instrument. It will therefore be able to play music from the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as contemporary works from the 20th and 21st centuries, in a region where instruments tend to be dedicated to music from the 19th century.
It took two years to build the instrument in the workshop. It has 2,318 pipes, 3 keyboards with 58 keys each, and 32 pedal keys.

The church is closed for works from 27 September to 18 December 2021. It will be reopened for the Christmas period, after which work will resume in early January and be completed in April 2022.
