Village de Pouancé

Pouancé has all the hallmarks of a medieval town. As you stroll through the streets, armed with the Petites Cités de Caractère leaflet, you can cross the Porte Angevine, the last of the 4 gates in the medieval wall, discover the fortified castle, and admire the pond and dovecote from the large artillery terrace. A stroll through Pouancé takes you on a journey through more than 1,000 years of history.
From the trading posts of the Roman Empire to the infernal columns of the young Republic, the golden age of this imposing fortress was in the 14th century, at the height of the Anglo-Franco-Breton battles. Its strategic location and the prosperity of its surroundings led to the passage of such great figures in French history as du Guesclin, Louis XI and Jean II d'Alençon, companion of Joan of Arc.

With its three lakes classified as sensitive natural areas, a beach and a leisure centre, Pouancé has also been awarded the Station Verte label.
