Herbignac, the gateway to Brittany
Leaning against the last foothills of the Armorican Massif in southern Brittany, bordering the undivided Brière marshlands, the territory that makes up the commune of Herbignac was once unavoidable.
Marked by Gallo-Roman and Nordic influences, Breton in its history and customs, the municipality of Herbignac has preserved in its place names the traces of those who, by bringing new ideas and techniques, laid out, transformed, developed, organised and shaped the landscape and habitat.
An important Neolithic heritage
Herbignac's megalithic buildings, which can be discovered on hiking trails, are surrounded by greenery and surprise hikers along the way.
Don't miss
The Riholo dolmen
The Château de Ranrouët
The commune lies at the crossroads of the main communication routes: Nantes - Vannes and Guérande - La Roche-Bernard - Redon.
This explains the location of the Château de Ranrouët, a magnificent vestige of the medieval period, locking in the Guérande peninsula and regulating the salt trade and pottery production.
The Potters' Market
Herbignac has been a major Breton pottery centre since Gallo-Roman times. This activity came to a halt in 1945. Fortunately, in recent years, several potters have returned to Herbignac to practise their skills and exhibit their work.
On the Saturday and Sunday of the Ascension weekend, the Herbignac Potters' Market is back in touch with history and tradition.
Local produce market
On Tuesday evenings in summer, in an authentic setting surrounded by old stones steeped in history, come and enjoy the friendly atmosphere as you discover and sample local produce at the night market.
