Built on the municipality of Saint-Jean-le-Vieux, in the hamlet of Varey, do not hesitate to discover the Castle of Varey, which bases are medieval.
The Château de Varey is located a short distance from the village of Saint-Jean-le-Vieux. There has been a fortification on this site since the 12th century. The magnificent building which can be seen there today dates from the 19th century when the château was completely rebuilt.
The original Château de Varey was destroyed during the French Revolution and lay in ruins for almost 65 years. It was renovated during the mid 19th century and the Dervieu family who lived there before the revolution took up residence once again from 1873. However, the château’s grounds are open to visitors throughout the summer season and are a lovely place for a stroll.
