Château de Bourdeau

Château de Bourdeau

Description

We only know the history of this château from 1263, when it belonged to the Seyssels, an important family in the Savoie.
In 1263, the château belonged to an important family in the Svoie - the Seyssels. In 1671, the château was sold to the Jesuits of Chambéry, who quickly re-sold it to Philibert Sallier de la Tour de Cordon, the ambassador and then minister of the État du Duc de Savoie Charles Emmanuel II. In 1710, an inventory of the Château shows that it was in poor repair, with collapsed vaults and broken walls. A château farmer occupied the premises because the Marquise de Cordon lived in Chambéry. The last owner of the château emigrated in 1793 due to the French Revolution. The uprising caused significant damage to the building. In March 1794, the four towers were knocked down, as well as the curtain walls, keep, moat and portcullis. In April 1800, the château was sold as national property to Jean-Baptiste Viviand de Chambéry. He completed the demolition by selling off the château piece by piece. The château would be sold and re-sold various times before being acquired by Monsieur Joseph Girod. He undertook extensive restoration works with the help of Pellegrini, the architect of the Palais de Justice in Chambéry, and the Casino in Aix-les-Bains, to restore the château to its former glory. Archery holes, machicolations (opening overlooking the walls, from which projectiles could be thrown) and turrets were rebuilt, and the entire château was encircled with an English-style garden.
In 1863, Georges Sand set her novel 'Mademoiselle La Quintine' in the château. In 1880, it was sold to Monsieur Gigot de la Villefaigne. From July 2016, the château has been restored and converted into a hotel and fine-dining restaurant.
