Viking tapestries from Överhogdal

Do not miss the museum's biggest attraction - the 1,000-year-old tapestries Överhogdalsbonaderna - Europe's oldest complete tapestries. 

Överhogdal tapestries is the museum's strangest objects.They are textile fabrics - from the exciting break time between pagan and Christian times! The long lengths are covered figures: humans, horses and various types of mythical sago animals. In long rows they blow up, past the trees, houses, churches and ships. The motifs and symbols attracts many different interpretations.

Some think that shows how tapestries missionary Staffan kristnar Härjedalen. Others have seen scenes from Volsunga Saga in the pictures. The latest theories argue that the tissues about the world's destruction - the Norse religion or Christianity Ragnarok apocalypse. What is undeniable is that the wall hangings containing designs from both Norse and Christian imagination.

Tapestries were found in 1910 in a shed next to the church in Överhogdals Härjedalen.
