Situated on either side of the River Mayenne, the commune of Grez-Neuville was created by the union of two ancient villages: Neuville, mentioned as early as the 9th century, and Grez, whose existence is attested to as early as the 11th century.
On the right bank, the church of Saint-Martin-de-Vertou, built in the 12th century, is constructed of sandstone rubble known as Roussard stone, a characteristic feature of local architecture. Opposite, on the other bank, the large, almost fortified mill dominates the dam and the river. It is a reminder of the intense activity that once animated the island, where several mills produced oil and flour. Until 1955, when it ceased operations, the building also housed a dairy.
To help you better understand the history of the commune, an interpretation trail leads you through several explanatory stations, which can also be accessed via the Baludik app.
Today, the Quai de l'Hirondelle is home to houseboats available for hire, as well as a pleasure boat. The site is also a popular stopping-off point for walkers, cyclists and horse riders, thanks in particular to La Vélo Francette, the national cycle route linking Ouistreham to La Rochelle, which runs along the peaceful banks of the Mayenne.
