Summer 1789, following the storming of the Bastille, the State is suffering from a chronic deficit, with the wealthy evading tax, a regime in tatters and an angry population seeking justice. At Versailles, on the night of 4 August, everything changed. In a breathless production, a single actor portrays around ten characters. *The Abolition of Privileges* is a lesson in history and theatre, a scathing illustration of politics and the power of speech, a breathless sprint that gives us the sense that history has suddenly accelerated.
