Charcoal Cauldron

Vestige de chaudron de Charbonnier
Credit : CC VEM

Description

A remnant of the activity of the charcoal burners of the Gorges de la Luzège, this kiln was used for the production of charcoal. This activity grew considerably in the 18th and 19th centuries with the growing demand from large cities, particularly Bordeaux. This production resumed during the Second World War with the use of diesel engines and was modernised with the use of metal cauldrons to carbonise wood.
