Classified as a 2nd grade river downstream of the Bridge known as "Les Bonhommes" in Bessines-sur-Gartempe/D203 and as a 1st grade river upstream of the same bridge in Bessines-sur-Gartempe as far as the D203. It flows through a beautiful, wooded, steeply-sloping valley, classified as "Natura 2000". Its currents are strong and impetuous, regulated by water mills and dams. All fish species are to be found, especially trout (some of which can grow to a considerable size). Carnivorous fish and cyprinids are mainly in shallow locks near Châteauponsac and Rancon. For a number of years, the Gartempe has been subject to a project of reintroduction concerning the Atlantic salmon. The ideal place for the trout is upstream of the Bridge of "La Prade", near Balledent, on the road from "La Prade" to "La Courcelle". The carnivores are mainly near the Bridge of Rancon on the D7. Fishing techniques allowed: natural bait fishing, cast fishing, dry-fly fishing, and the "Drachkovitch" system. On the 1st grade rivers, only one fishing rod per angler is allowed, with maximum 2 hooks and 3 artificial flies. On the 2nd grade rivers, 4 fishing rods are allowed per angler. A fishing license is required to fish in this area. Fishing licenses are sold at the newsagent's in Châteauponsac (14, place Xavier Mazurier) or on the website www.cartedepeche.fr.
