The Larris: A Hidden Refuge for Soldiers.

As you enter the village, you will pass the entrance to a larri on your left. These dry limestone hillsides, typical of the Somme region, provided natural shelter during the First World War. Known as “Shrapnel Ravine”, this larri offered a protected route to the top of the hill, where the surrounding area could be observed. The Australians naturally made use of this hidden location, establishing dugouts and headquarters there, safely out of sight of German forces.

However, the site was not beyond the reach of German shelling, which gave rise to its name.
