Located on the salt route, the village was an important commercial asset.
From Saint-Bonnet-du-Gard, a 7km hike takes you to the Sernhac tunnels, dug by the Romans.
A small village with the gentle Southern lifestyle.
Halfway between Nîmes and Avignon, the fortified village of Saint-Bonnet du Gard is 6 km from the Pont du Gard and 2 km from Remoulins.
Saint Bonnet lived in the 7th century. He ran his monastery in the village for 9 years and gave it his name. His personality, austerity and moral qualities, as well as his fight and action against slavery, earned him the episcopal see of Clermont-Ferrand.
Situated in a dominant position above the village it protects, the church is a fortified building in the "early Romanesque" style. Its construction dates back to the 9th century and makes use of the debris of the ancient Roman aqueduct.
