Meynes is a medieval village combining a rich past with a modern respect for tradition. Traces of the Templars' occupation are still visible: remnants of the ramparts, a typical bell tower and the hexagonal tower near the commandery.
Medenas in Carolingian times, the village was fortified and depended on the Marquis of Monteynard.
Traces of the Templars' occupation can be seen in the remnants of the ramparts, the two access gates, the typical bell tower and the hexagonal tower near the commandery.
The discovery of numerous prehistoric artefacts suggests that the site has been trodden by man since Neolithic times.
Meynes was an important pottery production center in the lower Rhône valley, particularly for foodstuffs.
Various objects found (sarcophagi, urns, flasks, etc.) confirm the presence of these pottery and brick factories from the earliest days of settlement in the area. There were as many as 13 pottery and tile kilns.
The rural character of Meynes is reflected in its vineyards, olive groves, market gardening and arboriculture, which are the mainstay of its economic activity.
Did you know? The healing waters of Meynes were used by kings and queens such as Charlemagne and François 1er.
