Jazz has been a natural part of Malagasy music since the 1950s. A journey to the heart of an island.
Music sets the rhythm of daily life for the Malagasy people. It is one of the fundamental components of their culture. Far from being limited to ancestral rhythms and sounds, Malagasy music draws on numerous influences. Malagasy jazz can be surprising. Its uniqueness lies in the exceptional richness of its musical heritage and its dynamism. Improvisation plays an important role in traditional Malagasy music, for example, the Vakodrazana (vakoka = traditions; razana = ancestors), to name just one. The very structure of traditional music explains why jazz has naturally integrated into Malagasy music since the 1950s, when it was pioneered by passionate trailblazers.
